canyoneering in kawasan falls

Canyoneering in Kawasan Falls is one of the most exciting and popular adventures in the Philippines.

Kawasan Falls is a three-stage cascade of clear turquoise water located in the jungles of Cebu Island.

In this blog post, we will share with you all you need to know to get ready for your next adventure- from practical tips on how to reach Kawasan Falls to what essentials to pack to things not to do during your canyoneering adventure.

What is canyoneering?

Canyoneering or canyoning means traveling down a canyon and engaging in a mix of activities like hiking, swimming, cliff jumping, and similar. It’s not only physically challenging but also mentally, as finding the most effective way through canyons frequently requires problem-solving abilities.

Why should you visit Kawasan Falls?

Famous for its turquoise-colored water and natural pools, Kawasan Falls is a real gem that attracts both domestic and international tourists each year. It’s located in picturesque Barangay Matutinao in Badian, a coastal town approximately 103 kilometers from Cebu City, and is easily accessible from nearby towns such as Moalboal and Oslob.

Kawasan Falls has so much to offer to both adventurers and those seeking relaxation- whether you want to soak in the scenic beauty or indulge in an adventurous activity like canyoneering.

How to get to Kawasan Falls

Cebu City to Kawasan Falls

There are buses that run from the Cebu South Bus Terminal to Badian, where Kawasan is located. You must take buses heading towards Bato via Barili, as those going to Bato via Oslob don’t stop on the side where Kawasan is located but the opposite one.

The buses leave every 30 minutes, starting early in the morning, and the ride usually lasts around 3 hours, depending on the traffic.

 Moalboal to Kawasan Falls

Located only a 45-minute drive away, Molaboal is closer than any other major location, so it’s the perfect base for exploring Kawasan Falls.

Traveling to Kawasan from Moalboal is easy, and there are various transportation options. Depending on your preferences and budget, you can take a bus, a taxi, or rent a scooter or car.

Oslob to Kawasan Falls

There’s not a direct bus between Oslob and Kawasan Falls, so you should first take a bus to Bato, then get off and change to a bus to Badian or Cebu via Barili. The ride lasts around 1.5 hours.

What to expect during canyoneering in Kawasan Falls?

Canyoneering in Kawasan Falls is an adventure-packed journey that lasts around 4 hours. It usually starts high up the river and ends up at the main pool of Kawasan Falls.

Once you get off your transfer, you’ll have to hike for about 15 minutes and then walk down some steep steps that lead to the river, where your adventure will start.

Kawasan consists of three main waterfalls, and on your canyoneering tour, you’ll visit all of them, starting from the top one, which is the least visited.

While navigating down these spectacular waterfalls, you’ll have an opportunity to have a quite exciting experience if you decide to jump and dive into the lagoons. There are two primary jumps that reach heights of 10 and 12 meters, respectively.

However, If you are afraid of such high dives, don’t worry; there’s an alternate way that lets you climb down next to the waterfalls, allowing you to take in the beautiful splendor up close.

As you descend, you’ll notice that the trail is becoming less demanding. Instead of walking in the river, you’ll walk mostly on dry land, with well-defined trails along the river.

When you reach the final pool and waterfall, the adventure comes to a peaceful close. Here, you can float slowly and unwind, perhaps with a cool beverage from a neighboring snack shack, capping off a day of adventure and thrill.

What to pack for your Kawasan Canyoneering Adventure?

When thinking about what to bring on your canyoneering adventure, think about comfort and practicality. In the end, you’ll be jumping, swimming, and hiking, so you want to be able to move freely.

Choose comfortable and quick-draining footwear, like aqua shoes or hiking boots, and clothes that can endure water. And, of course, you should wear swimwear and pack a change of clothes.

Furthermore, packing a towel might come in handy to dry off. Equally vital is a dry bag where you can securely store your items, such as towels and clothes, while you venture into the waters.

And if you want to capture those exciting moments, bringing an underwater camera or a GoPro would be a good idea.

What to DO and AVOID during your Kawasan canyoneering adventure?

If you want to have a safe and enjoyable experience during your canyoneering tour, there are some things you should and shouldn’t do. You should always wear a life vest and a helmet regardless of how good you swim and a helmet all the time.

Always listen and follow your guide, as their expertise can guide you to the safest places, and remember to hydrate before the activity.

On the other side, there are some things you should avoid doing on your canyoneering adventure. Don’t jump from any spot without the approval of your guide, and avoid bringing gadgets that might get wet and damaged.

Can non-swimmers do canyoneering?

If you’re wondering if non-swimmers can do canyoneering, the good news is that you certainly can. The canyoneering adventure is not restricted to swimmers only. Even if you’re a non-swimmer, you can fully immerse yourself in the thrilling experience.

Your guide will make sure that you are fully equipped with the necessary safety gear, such as helmets, life vest, and aqua shoes, and provide you with assistance ensuring that you enjoy canyoneering safely.
